In ancient times, there was a demon named Gayasur who was of very religious nature. He was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Once he was doing penance to please Lord Narayana. While doing penance, he became so engrossed in the devotion of Lord Vishnu that people started attaining salvation just by looking at him. Seeing this, Brahma ji asked Gayasur for a boon to perform a yagya on his chest. Gayasur agreed to this. When he lay down, people were not able to see him.

 

When he woke up after the Yagya, Lord Vishnu placed his foot on his chest. Then Gayasur asked for a boon from God that please keep your feet on him forever. On this God said that this will happen, and from today onwards whoever comes here will offer Pind Daan to his ancestors. His ancestors will attain salvation forever. Below the earth of Gaya is the body of Gayasura and above it is the feet of Lord Vishnu.
